Travel Safely with Your Pets
According to the Travel Industry Association 29 million Americans travel with their pets. Here are some tips to keep your pet safe during your travels.
1. Make certain that your pet’s vaccinations and check-ups are up to date, refill any medications and obtain a summary of your pet’s medical history from your Veterinarian.
2. If your pet is micro chipped also place an ID tag on your pet’s collar and a temporary ID tag with a cell phone number. For more information, please visit www.pethealthalert.com
3. Pack an ample supply of your pet’s regular food and water. Traveling with your pet is NOT the best time to introduce a new diet.
4. Pack extra supplies – dishes, bedding, litter and litter box, plastic waste bags, an extra collar and lead, grooming supplies, a favorite toy, first aid kit, medications, a container to store water, and a travel guide for pet friendly accommodation.
5. Have a few photos of your pet with you. A picture is worth a thousand words—medium yellow dog lost or tabby cat lost is not helpful but a photo immediately gets attention.
6. Keep your pet from riding with their head out the window or in the bed of a pickup truck. Flying debris can easily injure your pet.
7. NEVER leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees and also within a minute someone can break into your vehicle and steal your pet.
HAPPY TRAVELING TO YOU AND YOUR PETS!
What is one bag of pet food worth?
The economic downturn is affecting so many people and the news seems to get worse day by day. Animals do not understand Supply Side Economics, the weakness of the U.S. dollar or the rising cost of gas but they do understand that their owner may not be able to afford the cost of their next meal and are considering turning them in to the local animal shelter or worse yet just abandoning them. The minute this happens not only does the pet suffer but the owner grieves as well for the loss of a family member. Perhaps this is the time to help in your neighborhood? Do you know someone that is experiencing a difficult time? Is someone that you have done business with just lost their job? Writing a check is not always the answer as your neighbors may be too proud to accept it or you feel embarrassed to offer it – but a bag of pet food, a sack of cat litter or a gift certificate to a pet supply store for that extra bale of hay – what a
neighborly thing to do and it not only helps the pets but can lift the owner’s spirits if only temporarily
