BANGKOK FIVE
70-026 HIGHWAY 111, RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIFORNIA 92270,
(760) 770-9508

Bangkok Five is poised and ready for yet another season of fine dining at its distinctive, contemporary restaurant in Rancho Mirage. Owners Lucky and Jan Teachanarong take great pride in this sophisticated venue and its authentic Thai cuisine.

Bangkok Five enjoys an international reputation for authentic Thai food, and is one of the most highly recommended restaurants in the valley. Desert Resorts Concierge Association President Brenda Verna calls Bangkok Five "the very best Thai food in the desert - a must during your stay." Local restaurant reviewer Jade Thomas Nelson said, "Bangkok Five accomplishes what restaurants rarely can: an accord of food and décor." Food critic Maurice Bratt says, "It's a must to eat at Bangkok Five when you come to this area." It's no wonder that another desert reviewer writes, "Bangkok Five is a place to share with adventuresome friends."

Even visitors from Thailand have been happily surprised that the cuisine is not westernized. Like the city for which is it named, Bangkok Five offers inspired Thai cuisine that is fresh, original, and authentic. Juxtaposing hot, spicy tastes with soothing earthiness, experience the flavors of lime, coconut, peanuts, lemongrass, and bamboo shoots contrasted with curry, chili, ginger, and cilantro. Prepared fresh to order, let your server know your heat tolerance on a scale of one to 10.

Bangkok Five's square geometric architecture features a copper roof, volcanic rock and teak slatted shutters. With lofty beamed ceilings, dining and bar areas surround a stone-paved atrium accessed by 16-foot glass doors. Each area can be sequestered for private parties, with receptions or outdoor dining in the atrium.

Clay-colored walls are softly illuminated by Wabi Sabi, weathered rice paper and wood lanterns. White linen-clad tables are pin spot-lit and centered with a single flower. Designer Kerry Joyce has interpreted Thailand's simple elegance for their series of Bangkok restaurants in Southern California.

Bangkok Five offers a full bar, selection of Thai, imported and domestic beers and wines, as well as exotic specialty drinks. Seasonally, dinner is served from 5 p.m. nightly. Reservations are recommended.

CAFÉ  AT THE LODGE IN RANCHOMIRAGE
68-900 FRANK SINATRA DRIVE,
RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIFORNIA 92270,
(760) 321-8282

Coachella Valley's only AAA Four Diamond hotel restaurant is lighter, brighter, and even more inviting. Dark, traditional décor has bowed to contemporary flair. Matisse has edged out Rembrandt, and everything old isnew again, from china to chairs. The only thing that hasn't changed is the panoramic view as you step out ofyour car and you know you have reached nirvana. You might even see a bighorn sheep during your stay.

Chef Frederic Nail says the restaurant has evolved to follow the more informal hotel design. The food, like the new furnishings and lava fires on the terrace, is guest-friendly, but exciting. As always, dining at The Lodge is the synonym for a special occasion.

The restaurant seeks out top-of-the-line regional ingredients like scallops from Boston and micro-greens from an organic farm in Ohio. New York steak is dry-aged 28 days on the bone. All breads and pastries are made fresh daily in-house. And the long-serving kitchen staff, most recruited from Cordon Bleu in Pasadena, takes special pride in its work.

The Café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a lavish Sunday brunch in season with entertainment. You can enjoy al fresco dining on the patio and take in the spectacular view of the valley below. Following dinner, relax in the Lobby Lounge with a fine brandy and enjoy live entertainment Wednesday through Saturday in season. Reservations are recommended.

KOBE JAPANESE STEAK HOUSE
RESTAURANT ROW, 69-838 HIGHWAY 111,
RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIFORNIA 92270,
(760) 324-1717

Under the steady hand of General Manager Seishi Ihara, KOBE has enjoyed more than 27 years of entertaining locals and guests as the only Japanese-owned-and-managed steak house in the Coachella Valley.

Located in a replica of a 300-year-old Japanese country inn, the KOBE experience is as authentic as possible, from imported Japanese roof tiles to countless collectibles and artifacts. Your evening can focus on the intimate sushi bar, featuring the freshest fish and generous portions. And the authenticity continues into the dining room with entertaining master chefs behind teppan grills, artfully slicing and dicing everything from the highest quality Certified Angus steak and chicken to seafood delicacies such as lobster, tiger prawns, scallops, and halibut. Choices abound, including three types of fried rice, all prepared before your eyes as you enjoy your meal family-style in a fun and festive atmosphere around the communal table.

"Our people are our greatest treasure. That, coupled with consistency and quality, are what keep our guests returning year after year," Seishi explains. "You know the high quality of your meal since everything is prepared right in front of you - no hiding behind fancy sauces or complex recipes here!"

Your KOBE experience begins as you enter the traditional Japanese garden, with its hand made water wheel, traditional tsukubai fountain, and temple garden bell. A wooden mon, or gateway, greets you at the entry, while across the red footbridge you can enjoy a beautiful waterfall. Granite lanterns, a fixture in Japanese gardens, are placed throughout. The most popular feature remains the golden koi. KOBE is home to more than 50 fish; some have lived in the pond since the restaurant opened, and others were born there. Feeding them is a desert tradition.

This October, after many years with KOBE, Seishi Ihara will be retiring. John Fleming, a seasoned professional with experience at fine dining restaurants in New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles, has already assumed the helm at KOBE and plans to build upon the foundation that Seishi has established over the years.

"I'm very excited to be a part of such a desert landmark," remarks John, "and I plan to continue the KOBE tradition of wonderful food served in an entertaining and warm atmosphere." Open for dinner nightly at 5 p.m. Reservations recommended.

LORD FLETCHER INN
70-385 HIGHWAY 111 (AT COUNTRY CLUB DR.),
RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIFORNIA 92270,
(760) 328-1161

The last of four A. Egerton Cooper portraits of Sir Winston Churchill hangs in the entryway of Lord Fletcher Inn. It's said to be his best because by the time he painted it, he knew Churchill so well. The painting is more than authentic English art. It epitomizes the same intimacy and familiarity felt by guests of Lord Fletcher Inn - many of whom have been dining with Ron Fletcher since he opened the restaurant 40 years ago. Now owned and managed by his son, Michael Fletcher, dining at this intimate inn is an old-fashioned English experience unduplicated in the desert - also recommended by the 2002 Zagat Survey because the Inn's customers rated it among the best in the city.

The interior features a fascinating collection of authentic art, antiques, etchings, and bric-a-brac, all hand-selected and shipped from England by Ron Fletcher. Each room has its own special appeal. Some diners opt for the lively pub, which showcases a collection of English Toby mugs. Others prefer the main dining room or more intimate Shakespearean Room, named for its exquisite 200-year-old etchings depicting scenes from Shakespeare's plays.

Lord Fletcher Inn was the original restaurant that launched "Restaurant Row," Michael Fletcher points out. After almost four decades, it remains one of the busiest restaurants in the desert because of its atmosphere and generous portions of entrées. Nightly specials include Barbecued Beef Ribs with their famous Open Pit Sauce, Roast Chicken with homemade dressing and fresh Atlantic King Salmon. Dinners include soup or salad and are affordably priced from $19.85 to $29.00.

Those with "Sweete Toothes" need look no further. English Rice Pudding is made fresh daily, served with raspberries or cinnamon and whipped cream. For those who prefer a little punch, Lord Fletcher's signature Royal Brandy Ice, an exotic after-dinner ice cream drink, comes highly recommended.

Open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended. Casual attire. The pub opens for cocktails at 5 p.m. Prices and menu subject to change. All dinner items include soup or salad.
